Matching T-Shirts: Are they for you?

Sept 11 2011 (7)

There aren’t too many places you can go where wearing the same t-shirt as your dad would be cool. However, Walt Disney World IS one of those places! If you’ve been to WDW before, you know what I’m talking about. If you’re in the middle of planning your first trip, you may want to keep reading to find out what on earth I’m talking about.

In my last article, I talked about ways to “enhance” that limbo period when you’re anticipating your next Disney vacation. Today, I’m going to talk about one way that my family likes to “enhance” our Disney experience: personalized matching t-shirts! Yes, this is just one more way to add some extra fun to your vacation!

The main tenets of Disney matching shirts are usually: bright colours, one or more Disney characters, and you guessed it: the fact that everyone matches! Either everyone has the same character on their shirt, or is wearing the same colour, or is sporting the same theme, etc.

Since it may be difficult to find the exact same shirt in various sizes to fit every member of your family, achieving “the look” usually involves custom-making these shirts, or having someone custom-make them for you. If you are going to have them made anyway, you might as well personalize them! This gives the shirts (and your whole group) that extra oomph! Many people will put their first names on their shirts, some put the name of the group (or family) they are travelling with, or, another popular thing to do is to somehow announce the occasion which your family is celebrating on the shirt. Think “The Millers’ First WDW Vacation!” or “Happy Anniversary Mom & Dad!” or “The Clark Family Reunion!”

The way I see it, the benefits of wearing matching and/or personalized shirts are tri-fold. I’ve already named one benefit. It’s just one more thing to add to the fun of your WDW vacation. There are many things that you do in WDW that you don’t usually do at home, and this is just one more of those things! How cute will it be for your daughter to see that she’s wearing the same shirt as mommy, for example? The second benefit is from a practical standpoint. Most people make their matching shirts a bright colour, and there’s good reason for this: it makes it easier to spot your family members in the crowds! This can be especially helpful if you are travelling with a very large group! The fluorescent yellow really stands out in a sea of the typical greys and whites! Lastly, to add to last week’s column, and as one of my readers mentioned to me, making these personalized shirts takes some time! She creates matching Tie-Dye shirts. This means it’s another way to help pass the time until your next Disney vacation, all the while keeping the “Disney” in the air!

I, myself, am not too knowledgeable when it comes to making my own clothes. I have found a very talented woman on Etsy, who has made my family and I numerous matching outfits (see above picture). You can visit her store here: http://www.etsy.com/shop/jillalvarez2003

Happy planning!
