While we're in the queue...

Saturday, January 29, 2011

As Star Tours II nears its opening date - okay, we're months off still, but I'm getting uber-excited about this - I keep thinking of how cool this refurbished attraction will be. The thrill of sitting in the new Starspeeders for the first time. The 'new car smell' the attraction might unintentionally bring. The 3D-ness (is that a word?) and the multiple scenerios you might be met with every time you board. It is going to be outstanding!

But then I thought...what if....what if some of the magic that we love is taken away?

Some of the elements that made Star Tours what it was, was the queue. If the line was ever long, you were treated to venture through the Ewok forest and take in a magical atmosphere. But from when you enter the Star Tours terminal, you are immersed into a place that you've only seen before on film.

The creatures that are moving back and forth in the upper deck, controlling the ships, add to the darkened queue as you make your way to the launch gates. C-3PO and R2-D2 add a friendly touch to the queue as they work on repairing a Star Speeder that only Rex could have broke...

The droids are the next part of the queue - but this is something I'd like to see changed. You know how the droids had their regular routine of saying the same thing time and time again? Disney should work their magic and get some Cast Members to talk as the droids 'from an undisclosed area' to guests as they wind their way through the queues. I think especially during the big rush of guests the attraction will...well, attract, this would be a great interactive element.

But we'll have to wait and see. Disney has something big planned for Star Tours too. I hope the music, the droids, and a lot of the queue will stay the same. Keep it classic, with some upgrades.

And leave the real thrills for guests on the ride simulator itself!
