Every week I’ll be answering any question about the Disney-MGM Studios from planning questions to “what happened to...” questions. So if you’ve got something you’ve been wondering about or simply need clarification, please feel free to email them to me (use the form below).
On my next trip to Walt Disney World, I'd like to tour MGM and Animal Kingdom in one day. How can I do this? - Blair T.
Years ago, it was easier to combine the Studios and Animal Kingdom into one day but these days, the Studios is a full day park and Animal Kingdom is nearly there as well, yet folks still try to do it. You can tour both parks in one day, however, you will not see everything each park has to offer. In fact, you'll basically just see the highlights of each park.
You should start your day at Animal Kingdom and then sometime around lunch, migrate over to the Studios and finish up there. The issue with doing a half day at the Studios is the shows because their schedule can be hard to work in, especially if you only have an aftternoon to see what you can in. The easy attractions to work in are the rides because you can go on those anytime (queue waits permitting, of course). You'll need to prioritize what you want to see and try to work it in based on what is available.
I am starting to be excited about our trip to the World the last week of May. We will go to MGM once before the SWW then again on the SWW. Any tips? Are there any special activities we shouldn't miss or some that aren't worth the trouble? - Vin M.
If I may, I'll shamelessly plug my Star Wars Weekend site which has a plethora of information on past Star Wars Weekends so you may want to use that as a reference. My best tips are to arrive early to the park so you can be on hand for opening. Before you get to the park, you should prioritize what you want to do: buy merchandise, meet the celebrities or do SWW events. Some guests are avid fans of the Star Wars Weekend only merchandise and they go fast, especially the limited edition stuff. One you know what you want to do, plan your day around it.
Also, Star Wars Weekends is on 3 days per weekend so don't feel like you have to do everything in one day. A good strategy would be to spend your mornings in the Studios for Star Wars Weekend and then go to the other parks in the afternoon.
I remember the Backstage Pass walking tour. What happened to it? Is it still at MGM? - Paula M.
The Backstage Pass attraction was a nice little walking tour of the soundstages at the Studios back when real production was still being done. The tour had it's entrance on Mickey Avenue (where you can now meet Sorcerer Mickey) and you would walk past soundstages based on current productions and used to overlook Who Wants to be a Millionaire - Play It. In fact, you could see the old hallway for the tour in a recent photo of construction that tore down the old Millionaire soundstage.
The Tour was closed as of February 2002 and never reopened, mostly because real production was also cut at the Studios.
