Got this from Intercot. For now, we have to assume this to be rumor....

Anyways, the Movie Ride is going down in March for a 7 WEEK REHAB. The spiel is going to be worked on a little bit, and the Fantasia scene is being replaced...with what?...I'm working on it..

Also, the finale film is being updated, thankfully, (the finale now is as old as Armageddon).

Finally, a rumor that sounds reasonable. But why replace Fantasia???

I would say the reason behind Fantasia is because it's kind of skipped over on the tour. The CM just mentions it and moves on, whereas the other scenes get more lengthy intros. Just my 2 cents.

I'm having a brain fart on remembering just what the Fantasia scene is. Somebody help me remember what this area looked like. Thanks.

It's that scene on the left as you turn the corner, past it on the right is the Casblanca scene. It's not an audio-animatronic scene, but a canvas with a cut scene from the movie being played on it with Mickey on a pedastool and he's moving his hands alot, with lots of waves around him.

If I may quote the bible, "For once I was blind, now I can see." I remember that scene now, Thanx, Matt.

It just seems like the Fantasia section is easily maintained(just a movie projection). Also, if my memory is correct, it and Mary Poppins are the only Disney movies represented(not counting the movie at the end).

Another excellent point Jim, but my guess is since everyone and their mother has been calling for an update to that attraction(hence, the million and one rumors of a rehab) so Eisner & Co.(AKA Greed Inc.) may have finally decided to do something about it.

Some of the benefits of changing Fantasia scene are:
1). No large loss - There is no expensive audio animatronics to trash, no exotic set to lose. Aside from some tin foil and the canvas sheet that the movie is shown on, it's no huge loss to Disney.

2). If I had to bet, I'd say it'll be replaced with a fairly newer film, probably a Disney film, which helps boost sales of video and merchandise. Snow White would be a good bet as Disney released the Platinum edition DVD last year.

3). Helps quell people like us, yelling at them about need for rehab.

Most of what I just said is pure speculation, but it makes sense to me.

Here's an interesting note regarding the Fantasia scene...

Quote

Just a side note to the person who liked the Fantasia scene:

Fantasia was never supposed to be in that area at all. It was supposed to be the tornado scene from the wizard of oz which them took you to Oz. The large fan that blows on you was supposed to be the winds of the tornado a blowin' and if you look at the shape of the "funnel" that the fantasia clips play on, you will see (if you remove the brickwork stuff) it is in the shape of a tornado. Originally, it was supposed to have be totally black and have the witch flying by on broom and a few other things projected onto the wall like in the movie.

Deb's site(WDWIG.com) is reporting a rehab as well, although not as long...

The Great Movie Ride will close for rehab March 3 and is expected to reopen April 18.

More news...The only replacements are an updated finale film and replacing Fantasia with ...something. This info comes from a CM that works at GMR so hopefully more info to follow.

Also, small steps have begun, as one of the vehicles has gotten an update already. New panels on the driver's area.

From the Mouse himself, the rehab will be from February 24, 2003 - April 13, 2003.
