Batman Begins is a movie in which I cringed about when I heard about on Darkhorizons.com months ago. The reason for my cringing was the last 2 Batman films that were fun movies but less than stellar when compared to the first two installments in the Batman series. The original Batman film still holds up well today, with Jack Nicholson giving a brilliant performance as the maniacal Joker that is best described as "over the top". The second Batman film, Batman Returns was inferior to the first but a fine film nonetheless.

The Batman series was driven into the ground with forgettable performances by Val Kilmer and George Clooney portraying the title role and last but certainly not least, the directing of Joel Schumacher. Schumacher's vision for his Batman series was radically different that Tim Burton's feel for the Batman saga. So much so, that Schumacher's "look" of Gotham City immediately turned against what the the first two Batman movies were all about and most importantly, what defined the comic book from which the films are based. Schumacher's Gotham City was vibrant and colorful, opposed to Tim Burton's Gotham which stayed truer to the comic by being a dark, rougher looking town.

Enough with my Batman rants, on to the new Batman film. What a surprise! I thought this would be a valient effort to resurrect a once great film series, and I was wrong. This a great movie, period. It surpasses the first movie in my opinion because it manages to balance the tortured soul saga that is Bruce Wayne and entertains with the exploits of a Batman-in-training who is literally "learning to fly" in one scene.

Go see this movie! It may be the best this summer blockbuster season has to offer.

I agree with the villain being scary, I wish we had more time with the Scarecrow in the movie.
