Scary Attractions

Everyone has a different tolerance for scary rides. For some, the Tower of Terror is just too much and for others, Playhouse Disney strikes fear into their hearts. Here are the top attractions at Disney’s Hollywood Studios that might make you (or someone in your party) a little uneasy about seeing it (sorry, Playhouse Disney didn’t make the final cut).

Tower of Terror

The eery theming, mostly darkness and sudden sounds and drops make this the scariest attraction at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The drops alone scare most folks (and most of those scared by the drops tend not to ride in the first place). But once you enter the lobby and see delapidated surroundings and then make your way to the boiler room and eventually to the elevator itself, you’ll be on edge for sure.

Rock ‘n Roller Coaster

Waiting in line seems innocent enough. The props in the queue area are interesting (who doesn’t enjoy rolling their hands over that marble door?) and the preshow is fun but as soon as you exit the preshow and hear the screech of the "tires", suddenly you realize what you’re in for. The fact you go upside-down is pretty nerve-wracking for most people before you even ride and for some, it’s just too intense.

Star Tours

At this point we’re going to attractions that can have elements that can scare you rather than the whole attraction being spooky. Star Tours is scary for the younger set because of the loud noise and moving simulator. Neither is terrible on it’s own but when you combine the two, it has the distinct possibilty to scare those who still have problems seperating fantasy from reality (not easy in Walt Disney World).

Fantasmic!

Fantasmic! is great for the kids and adults alike but there are some elements that can frighten the wee ones. Like Star Tours, you’ve got the loud noise factor. Explosions, which scary on their own when you’re not expecting them, are also scarier by the fact they tend to be loud. The villians in the attraction also can be scary for some children, especially when you have not just the images and sounds of them, but you have the giant snake appear. And oh yea, it’s all in the dark.

Backlot Tour

Two words: Catastrophe canyon. The preshow isn’t that scary but Catastrophe Canyon can be intimidating. Your tram tour is pretty sedated but when you get to the Canyon, it all changes. Some kids (and adults) don’t know off the bat it’s all simulated so when the bridge starts to shake, the siren blares and hundreds of gallons of water come streaming at you (and over you), you can’t blame the kids for being a little scared.

Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular

Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular has some scenes with loud noises, people fighting and falling and pyrotechnics. Most kids, even the younger ones, probably won’t be scared by this but those who are "frightfully sensitive" to these sort of things may want to skip it.

Muppetvision 3D

When you’re in the dark and these huge 3D images are being displayed on a screen in front of you, things can get a little dicey for the kids. Going from fully lit conditions to dark can be a bit much for kids and when you start the film and add in the soundtrack (which is loud and at times, like in the finale, can get real loud) you have the recipe for scaring some children.
