Osborne Lights Light Canopy

Without question, the big "hit" of the Osborne Lights this year is the light canopy on San Francisco street.  It's the one thing everyone I talk to about the lights brings up and naturally the first question I had about it was why is it there.

Without question, the big "hit" of the Osborne Lights this year is the light canopy on San Francisco street.  It's the one thing everyone I talk to about the lights brings up and naturally the first question I had about it was why is it there.

Many people that have seen it have alluded to it looking a lot like the light canopy found on Fremont Street in Las Vegas.  And after hearing so many people hypothesize the origin of the lights, I had to figure out where they really came from.  Is the light canopy inspired by Fremont Street? Or is it from somewhere else?

To get an answer, I turned to John Phelan, Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights show director and asked him if the light canopy is based on Fremont Street in Las Vegas or are they inspired by something else?

John's answer surprised me, "As we moved the display into LED lights, we became aware of the color changing leds via discussions with vendors and industry development. It had nothing to do withFremont Street."

As it turns out, the light canopy isn't inspired by Fremont Street or any other real life display.  Rather, it may have been something as simple as looking through a magazine or other publication and seeing something that John and his team thought would look cool.
