[Upbeat, interstellar fun returns to Disney's Hollywood Studios
Return to "a galaxy far, far away" to celebrate the power of the Force—and the 30th anniversary of Star Wars™: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back! Saluting this intergalactic Saga, from its origins to its latest animated incarnation, are part of the festivities of Star Wars Weekends, starting this May at Disney's Hollywood Studios™.
"The Empire Strikes Back is one of the most beloved of the Star Wars movies, particularly among fans from the generation that first saw it," said Mark Renfrow, Show Director, Walt Disney Entertainment, who has been a major creative "Force" behind Star Wars Weekends since it began in 2000.
The second, the fifth and the first
"The Empire Strikes Back was the second Star Wars release and the fifth chapter in the Saga," Mark explained. "It was also the first time a lot of characters appeared, like Lando Calrissian, Yoda and Boba Fett." Mark also hinted that the fan favorite Boba Fett will have a "big presence" during this year's Star Wars Weekends. Mark is also dreaming up ways to create behind-the-scenes experiences of the film—and of course, you never know when you'll run into Luke, Leia, R2-D2, C-3PO and Han Solo (pre-carbonite, hopefully).
Another aspect of Star Wars celebrated during this event is Star Wars: The Clone Wars™,the awesome animated series that features its own set of fantastic characters and a growing legion of fans. "It's a tremendous success," said Mark. "Even my own kids love it, with no coaching from Dad. It seems that each generation has an aspect of Star Wars to call its own.
"One of the things we'll be doing this year is to give Clone Wars fans a sneak peek at what's ahead for season three. They'll be in on story lines that most regular viewers of the series won't see until the fall. In fact, some of the plot points we revealed at last year's Star Wars Weekends have still not aired on TV!"
More fun than a barrel of Wookiees
You can expect to encounter Star Wars celebrities, trivia contests, cool collectibles, behind-the-scenes presentations, a motorcade parade and of course, the thrilling Star Tours attraction. The extremely popular Jedi Training Academy will be twice as space-tastic with double the villainy as both Darth Vader and Darth Maul face off against young Guests who become Padawan warriors.
Dozens of favorite Star Wars characters will roam Disney's Hollywood Studios freely. You can meet them and greet them, but you can also have fun interacting with them—especially during the now legendary Hyperspace Hoopla, which has taken on a life of its own among fans.
"Hyperspace Hoopla started as an end–of–day street party," said Mark. "It's a bit more than that now. It has become a massive must-see. We love it, Guests love it and it's our goal to top ourselves every year."
Look for Star Wars Weekends May 21–23, May 28–30, June 4–6, and June 11–13, 2010. All this extra fun is included with regular Disney's Hollywood Studios admission.
