Hollywood Studios Blog

"All of Hollywood Studios that's fit to print"

The new year kicks off in just a few days and with 2011 right around the corner, it's time to look at what will be new in Hollywood Studios in the coming new year.

Disney Junior – Live on Stage!

A favorite among toddlers, Playhouse Disney - Live on Stage! is set to be replaced by Disney Junior – Live on Stage!.  This is more of an attraction update than a completely new show.  It will remove television shows that are no longer in active development and replace them with some newer shows.  ...

Believe it or not, the Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights is almost over for 2010 so it's time to highlight the best parts of the lights this year.

The Black Cat

A fan favorite to try and find every year is the black cat light display.  The black cat in the Osborne Lights is a hidden joke among the Imagineers.  It's actually a Halloween light display that was accidently included in the lights the Osborne family sent to Walt Disney World.  Cast Members hide the cat each year and this year it was located behind the staircase near the Funeral...

Late last year, Disney tested out "character corals", where a well-organized space is quarantined off for character interactions and photos.  The idea was good and guest feedback was positive but I think we all agreed the aesthetics of the area were not perfect.

Starting today, Christmas 2010, the corals are back but redesigned.  Our good friend Paul Chadkin reports they are back in front of the Sorcerer's Hat starting today.  The boxes are smaller and blue tripods have been removed and replaced with "more traditional black, retractable-belt stanchions".

The new corals are...

Disney's Hollywood Studios is ready for New Years Eve 2011.  For those going to Disney's Hollywood Studios on New Years Eve, there's a lot to see and do this year.

  • Fantasmic: 6:30pm, 8:00pm & 10:00pm
  • Mulch, Sweat and Shears: 8:00pm, 9:00pm, 10:00pm, 11:00pm
  • New Years Eve fireworks called "Lights, Camera, Happy New Year": 11:55pm

The entertainment for New Years Eve this year mirrors what we saw in 2010.  The "Lights, Camera, Happy New Year" fireworks are shot off behind the Sorcerer's Hat as well as down Hollywood Boulevard and it's a really great fireworks display.

If you want to get a...

On this date in 1992, Aladdin's Royal Caravan parade made its debut at the Disney-MGM Studios and while that parade wasn't the pinnacle of Disney parades, it was part of a trend that separated parades in the Studios from the parades in the other DIsney parks.

Thanks to FlickRiver for this old photo

Aladdin's Royal Caravan was a parade that coincided with the theatrical release of the film Aladdin, which opened in theaters a few weeks earlier on November 25, 1992.  The timing of the parade, however, was no coincidence. The parade was really an extension of the marketing plan for the film and it...

Yesterday marked the official beginning of the Christmas and New Years season in Walt Disney World and if you're brave enough to visit Hollywood Studios during this time of the year, there are some changes to be aware of so you can be best prepared.

Before you step foot in Hollywood, you will need to park your car.  Most guests driving to the park take the entrance near the Boardwalk resort, which is just 2 lanes wide.  If you can help it, it may make more sense to actually go off Disney World property and re-enter on World Drive so you can drive through the main entrance to the park that sports over 6 lanes.  There tends to be much higher traffic problems for much of the morning hours from the resort entrance and it gets back up quickly.

Insider Tip: If you are trying to go to the Studios and the lane to make the turn to Hollywood Studios is really backed up, take the opposite turn towards the Boardwalk resort, then make a U-...

According to our good friend Paul Chadkin, the planned refurbishments of the Backlot Tour and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids Movie Set Adventure refurbishments have been cancelled.

Originally, both attractions were scheduled scheduled to begin January 3, 2011 and run through January 29th.  But Paul reports both refurbishments have been pushed back, with Backlot Tour now looking to close in September of 2011 instead.

It's unknown why the refurbishments have been cancelled/delayed, but it may have to deal with the crowds for the holiday season and concerns about total attraction capacity of...

A new fod kiosk has been added to the Backlot area of the park, near the exit to Muppetvision 3D.  The food kiosk serves Italian food that is cooked at Mama Melrose's Ristorante Italiano nearby and offers a few basic options for those looking for a quick meal.

Called "Ristorante Italiano", the kiosk appears to be a former Epcot Food and Wine Festival booth and was added to help deal with the higher crowds anticipated for the busy Christmas and New Years...

Let's take a look back at a classic part of Disney's Hollywood Studios that is unfortunately no longer part of the park anymore.  This week, we're going to visit the Magic of Disney Animation and watch a favorite preshow of mine, the "Back to Neverland" film that starred Walter Cronkite and Robin Williams.  Whether you've seen it before or never got a chance, I think you'll really enjoy this film.

Special thanks to Martin Smith for producing this video tribute

Starting December 19th, Mickey's Christmas Carol Movie will be shown in the Premiere Theater. The film is 30 minutes long and will be showing daily every hour on the hour starting at 12pm to 10pm.

It's not clear yet as to how long this will run, but more than likely until about January 1st or 2nd, 2011.

The Premiere Theater is located in the Backlot area, near the Cars meet-n-greet and the San Francisco backdrop on the Streets of America.
