Studios Central is beginning a blog series profiling our runners from Team Studios Central. This will give everyone a chance to meet each runner and get to know their running history and personal story. Today we begin with Amanda North.
Amanda currently lives in Scarsdale, NY with her husband and three children ages 9, 7, and 5. She has a very fulfilling full-time job working with children as a pediatric urologist at a children’s hospital in the Bronx.
As an active high school athlete in soccer and lacrosse Amanda found it difficult to stay active after college. She tried different couch to 5k programs, but never completed them. One day in 2010 Amanda read about another runner who was training for her first half marathon. Amanda found it intriguing and decided it was time for her to set a goal and begin training for her first half marathon too; the 2011 Walt Disney World Half Marathon. Amanda knew what type of challenge was ahead and began training vigorously for her upcoming race. After completing that half marathon she never looked back. Today she has completed 2 full marathons, 7 half marathons including the 2013 Goofy Challenge, and other shorter races. She continually runs 3 times a week to stay in shape which will get her ready for 2 upcoming half marathon races. To say Amanda was bitten by the running bug is and understatement.
Recalling memories from her first half marathon Amanda says she smiled the entire way through the race. She couldn’t believe she was doing it. She remembers receiving a text message from her family after her 5k split telling her to slow down or else she’d run out of steam. She says the experience truly changed her life and she knew immediately after crossing the finish line another half marathon was in her future.
As for her love for Disney Amanda says it allows her family to reconnect after weeks and months of the daily grind. For her it’s not about any one special Disney moment, but the special feeling she gets when she’s in the parks with her family.
Amanda credits her fire for running to runDisney. It’s what got her to become a serious runner. Even her family considers her a runner. During a recent weekend trip Amanda told her family she needed to set her alarm clock for an early AM wake-up so she could get her scheduled run completed. Her mother acted astonished and her children, knowing their mother’s running routine, said “mom does this all the time”. That was the day Amanda knew she had been transformed into a runner.
In her free time, which is limited, Amanda enjoys spending time with her family, reading, and, of course running. She also manages to write a running blog called ‘A Dr. Mom runs to Disney’ which you can find here. She’s ecstatic to be a part of Team Studios Central which keeps her motivated to continue her running quest.
